Don't Jail Woman for "Black Lives Matter" Pin!

An Ohio woman was jailed for wearing a "black lives matter" pin during court proceedings.

Judge Robert Milich of the Youngstown Municipal Court in Ohio asked the woman to remove her "Black Lives Matter" pin. When she declined, he threw her in jail for contempt of court.

Milich claims that the decision has nothing to do with his own personal politics, and was based on the idea that a judge should be objective. Community activist and attorney Kim Akins disagrees. She says, "No one wearing an American flag button would be removed. No one wearing a crucifix or a Star of David would be removed. So why this particular statement bothered him so much ... is bothersome,"

Whether or not the judge supports the Black Lives Matter movement, it should not be a violation for an attorney to peacefully show support for the movement in court or anywhere else. Please sign the petition to urge Judge Milich to overturn his decision, release the woman from jail and clear her record of this incident.

I am shocked that an Ohio woman was jailed for wearing a "black lives matter" pin during court proceedings.

I understand that your decision has nothing to do with his own personal politics, and was based on the idea that a judge should be objective. But community activist and attorney Kim Akins points out, "No one wearing an American flag button would be removed. No one wearing a crucifix or a Star of David would be removed. So why this particular statement bothered him so much ... is bothersome,"

Whether or not you support the Black Lives Matter movement, it should not be a violation for an attorney to peacefully show support for the movement in court or anywhere else. I respectfully urge you to reverse your decision, release the woman from jail and clear her record of this incident. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider this petition.
